Kathmandu. Hungary has ordered 10 members of the Russian diplomatic mission to leave the country for allegedly engaging in activities deemed unacceptable for diplomats. Foreign Minister Anita Orban informed about this on Tuesday.
Foreign Minister Orbán did not provide detailed information about the activities of the Russian diplomat. It has not been clarified how soon they will have to leave Hungary.
According to him, the Russian ambassador was informed that according to the assessment of Hungarian officials, 10 members of the Russian delegation had committed unacceptable activities for diplomats under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations in Hungary.
The Vienna Convention sets out international rules on the conduct, rights and responsibilities of diplomats.
The foreign minister said that this decision will protect the security and sovereignty of Hungary. However, he clarified that there is no sign of breaking diplomatic relations with Russia.
"This does not signal the severance of diplomatic relations with Russia. Hungary wants to continue the necessary dialogue based on mutual respect and respect for the rules," he said in a statement.
This step is seen as a change in the policy of the government led by Prime Minister Peter Magyar. Magyar pledged to end Hungary's pro-Russian policy when he took office earlier this year.
Previous Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was seen as an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. During his tenure, Hungary tried to delay or block some of the sanctions imposed by the European Union on Russia. In addition, various energy cooperation agreements with Russia were also promoted.
